On behalf of Forest Unlimited, thank you so much for volunteering
to help with this season’s redwood seedling planting event.
This update is to answer requests for additional information as
well as to restate some information that either needs repeating
or has changed.
We have expanded the planting to four dates: January 5,
6, 11 and 12. If you have not yet done so, please contact
either Carl at mcwahl@poetworld.net
or 874-9268 or Bob at ebnelson@sonic.net
or 874-1740 with your preference(s).
On each day, our rendezvous will be the parking lot in front
of the Union Hotel restaurant in Occidental at 8:30 a.m.
We’ll explain the day’s itinerary, take food requests,
form car pools, and depart for the morning planting site by around
9:15. Lunch will be brought to this site. After lunch, we’ll
depart to the afternoon planting site. For each planting day, we
have paired two properties that are physically as close as possible.
With respect to car pooling: Pick up trucks are a plus for hauling
planting supplies and trees, but passenger cars hold more people
and can also access the properties. We need both. If you have a
4WD vehicle and can bring it, please let us know!
Please dress for the occasion. Some properties
will have considerable exposure (usually with spectacular views).
Dress warm, consider layered clothing, use sunscreen, bring a cap,
and wear comfortable boots. Waterproof boots (or slipover boots)
will probably be a plus. Due to unpredictable weather, prepare to
bring raingear. Consider bringing an additional pair shoes to wear
in your car. Disposable latex gloves will be available. If you double-glove,
your hands should stay clean and dry. We suggest bringing work gloves
if you prefer not using latex gloves.
Shovels, plastic buckets, and kneeling pads will be available. However,
if you have a spade shovel, or, better yet, a trenching (drain)
shovel, please bring it. Plastic 5 gallon buckets with handles are
also needed. Most people will work in teams of two, and each team
will be issued a kneeling pad.
In general, the terrain will range from relatively flat land to
mild slopes. There are a few moderate slopes on a couple properties.
In addition to improving the environment, we want you to have a
good time. Preparation and proper attire are the keys to an enjoyable
and rewarding experience—especially when planting in January.
Please contact us if there are any other questions and/or concerns.
If you cannot make the date, or wish to change dates, please let
us know. Thanks again.
Sincerely yours,
Carl Wahl & Bob Nelson
